In 1994, Tony Piermont was President and Jack Silva was Vice President. Shop Committee members Angelo Latini, Jed Davis and Edward Ferreira completed the Negotiating Committee. David Kay was Recording Secretary and Angelo Latini was Secretary Treasurer. John R. Capobianco was our Business Agent.
Local 587 voted for a 14.2% pay-cut for this years contract, effective February 1, 1994.
At the time, work was slow and rumors surfaced that indicated that Raytheon
could pull out of Portsmouth, closing the RI facility. The company also
sought tax relief from the town of Portsmouth. The
pay cut with two subsequent years of 0% increases set the union back
monetarily, and there are many who wonder if a strike would have been in
order, but considering the atmosphere of the business at
that time, there were few who wanted to take the risk of losing the RI
facility.
